Drilling Rock takes forever
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? I have 2 larger drills attached to an MMRTG power unit, but waiting for the power to apply and drill is like waiting for grass to grow. I have rock resources in the areas I'm drilling. My last throw of the dice to speed things up is to duplicate my drilling machinery so I have many working at the same time. If this doesn't move things along then sadly, I'm done with this game. Up until this point this has been v. immersive and a promising experience, but the excruciating amount of time trying to extract rock is killing it for me.

You need more MMRTGs, not more drills, an MMRTG provides about 300w/h of power and a large drill requires 3.2kw/h (If I remember right). So for continuous running, without stored power, you will need 11 MMRTG's per large drill. Also, each time a drill completes it's cycle, it can pull 20 rock, so if it is pulling less, you may need to find a location with more material (each square in the map has X amount of resources.

I have the same problem. I get a few barrels at first with no problems and then it's like 1 tick every 5 minutes. How do you know where to put the drill so it drills resources faster? Is that what sampling rocks is for? If so, mine seems to be broken. I anylize a sample and it just says success and nothing changes. Am I doing something wrong here?

Take the sample to a lab table and analyze it. Make sure you have the equipment box as well set up on the table. Then open your map after analyzing the sample and click 'Resources'.

Well, for most single players, 4-6 is good enough to keep consistent production, if you want to cut down on objects in the game to reduce video lag, that mod would help. Personally I think having a more powerful version that requires more resources to build could help reduce the lag, but also not affect the balance as much.

I resolved my problem by making 3 large drills (placing each 1 in a seperate resource sector) powered by 2 MMRTG's for each one. This produced rock at a rate I could handle while I did other tasks.

What happens is, when you plug the drill in initially, it uses up all the power in the MMRTG battery to run continuous. Once that's gone, you drop to a much lower cycle rate.

On top of that, most spots are only good for 300-400 rock before they are empty. The amount pulled per cycle decreased as the amount left declines. Once you analyze the rock samples, you can monitor the exact amount left on the map.

Yes, and the difference between sectors hardly varies much. I analyzed 9 connected areas to form a huge mass and have systematically mined each sector of each area. The problem is, the devs have not given us a large enough number of rock in each sector, so we must work harder and more systematically to get it. It would be more playable if they doubled this number at least.
