Take the sample to a lab table and analyze it. Make sure you have the equipment box as well set up on the table. Then open your map after analyzing the sample and click 'Resources'.
Well, for most single players, 4-6 is good enough to keep consistent production, if you want to cut down on objects in the game to reduce video lag, that mod would help. Personally I think having a more powerful version that requires more resources to build could help reduce the lag, but also not affect the balance as much.
On top of that, most spots are only good for 300-400 rock before they are empty. The amount pulled per cycle decreased as the amount left declines. Once you analyze the rock samples, you can monitor the exact amount left on the map.
