Winning battles will get you food. Also, maybe you have too many soldiers or need to conquer more territory

Try to ensure your armies (you should have only two or three full armies) are led by Warlords with maxed out Seneschal skill or at least by someone who has high leadership regardless of class. Those two things cut down your food costs drastically. If you have level 1 or level 2 units that are idle and eat a lot, don't be afraid to disband them as you can recruit units with a couple of levels of xp from Strongholds with the right upgrades. Also keep an eye on the units that you keep as the basic units that can be upgraded with research are far cheaper to maintain than the alignment specific units like Sangreal Knights.

If one of your armies is idle, keep it in a Stronghold that has the upgrade that reduces upkeep costs or in a keep that does the same. Higher level units consume less food so don't get your veterans killed and maybe give a point or two to upkeep reduction on high maintenance units like Knights (IIRC one of them can eat over a thousand units of food each season at low levels).

Food only became an issue for me when the ghost armies ran rampant and started decreasing the populations and it's ultimately not much to panic about as long as you have enough food to do recruiting at the start of each year.
