I am more of an explorer type gamer than a combat gamer and there are very few games where it is fun and you can just chill out. Just sad to see one that I liked end up going the combat route.
I guess they think they will get a larger player base, which is probably correct. They could always go the player mod route which would allow me to solve the problem, but I doubt that is likely.
Personally i like the combat and wish it was more in depth.
I feel like if i stand in one place collecting resources, pirates come by more often. If im constantly moving then the pirates dont hit me every 3-5 minutes.
Is there any truth to this? Is how pirates work related to the city being stationary in one location for long?
However you already have the map and you already have the skill tree. All you would need to do is to make a mystery story finding clues along the way to direct you to some far away place where you find the golden fleece or something. If the place was not that accessible it would require certain upgrades only found from various cities across the map.
Ideally I think more options are better as you are then able to attract a wider audience.
I've had two towers and enemy planes inflicted quite big damage to my city. Not super big, but unpleasant.
I only have 3 defensive towers. Enemies will fly in, do damage, get some buildings to 60% or so and I repair them because they're basically dead after one pass. I can get them repaired before a 2nd pass if they survived the first one. I also have those special towers that provide a buff in an area around them which can provide defense for all buildings in it or buff attack of towers and canons by 10%. Just make sure you have people spare to repair buildings and trees/wood available for them.
The original game would be what you are looking for then. Combat is a welcome addition to the winning formula in the previous game, I would strongly recommend picking up kingdoms if you want a non-combat experience.
I really enjoy the combat in this game. From the layout of the canons being important because they can literally hit your own buildings lol to the sort of tower defense style of it. It's simple to get to grips with too.
But I do agree it should be optional. There are people who just prefer a chill experience and they shouldn't feel alienated from it. This is what I reckon all citybuilders with combat should always have, the option to go pacifist mode.
This is still possible but adding more permutations takes time to tune and test given the very small dev team for this game.
We will look into all this during Early Access development. :)
Perhaps ease players into combat a little more? Like, figure out a way to make it mandatory for the player to build at least one defense tower then have only 1 pirate craft come at them for the first few tries. Let them get used to it slowly then increase the number of craft per wave until it gets to the normal number it is now.
