I think that's fine to start with, and they can make a much better map later on.
When it comes to assault it's more about the experience itself. For me at least. Sure winning is good, but as long as there are no trolls or AFKers, I can have my fun.
It shouldn't be approached with a conquest mindset.
The only real issue I see with assault is that you might get stuck with a "boring" god. Sometimes it happens to me, but it's not so bad.
Physical only ? guess mystical mail could come in handy for the unsuspected magical dmg ;
On the other hand, magical only is fairly rough : might not destroy towers as fast (not sure structures take more dmg if you do full pen magical).
Basically : variety of situations -> adapt your build and looking at what teammates' (if one is getting the teleport relic to a ward, might as well join in if needed, etc) and your opponents' ; plus it's way shorter than conquest and more chill, usually, most likely because people play gods that they may have never picked or tried, good to have some variety (unless teammates always try to give you tank/support gods and you accept, some goddesses and gods are more sought than others)
But, very understandable if some people hate the random factor and thus won't touch that mode.
