New (and basically new) players in Smite 2
Just to explain my position at the outset, I don't really care how much "better" this is than Smite 1, and how much it does or doesn't qualify as a new game. The price point for a basic founders pack doesn't bother me, and I appreciate video games need to be paid for somehow. The real questions for me are this. Will this game attract a significant base of new players who aren't multi-year veterans of Smite 1? Will this feel like a new game at least in the sense that it is populated by people who don't immediately know exactly what they are doing, and do not expect the same of everyone around them?

I say "new" and "basically new" players because I acknowledge two things. First, MOBAs are more a genre than individually different games. Anyone coming from an established MOBA is starting far ahead of anyone completely new to the game. And also, I'm a returning player myself who did in fact play Smite 1 and I wasn't too bad at it, but that was years and years ago and lets just say I got good enough to find myself in matches with players who seemed to take their expectations very seriously and man, that was miserable. If that's going to be most of the players in Smite 2, I know I won't enjoy playing it.

Again, cards on the table - what attracts me most to Smite 2 isn't whatever technical improvements may or may end up making the game "better" - it's just the opportunity for at least a partial reset of the community and the hope that in a game with a critical mass of new players things might be less elitist for a least a while and people will have a chance to enjoy playing the game instead of every match being treated like an e-sport tryout by players who wouldn't make it in an e-sporting beer league anyway.

So, on that level, any thoughts?

I already got 2 new people to join Smite alpha that never played Smite before. They both came from LOL and loved Smite 2. Now we play Smite 1 to train for release in July

I don't think it will attract many new players, most will stick with Dota or LoL. However, it may bring back a significant number of old players who stopped playing.

Either way, the number of new players won't change the overall attitude/atmosphere within the game. MOBAs are known for having elitist/toxic communities so expect that to be the status quo once the game is out of alpha. Your best bet is to play more casual modes within Smite. Anything other than Conquest or Joust shouldn't be too bad.

No.

No because everyone knows the Smite community is a combination of

1) toxic

2) two-faced

3) for the actual friendly ones you have to stick with them like glue and organise meetups, not many can be bothered

4) MOBA ship sailed long ago

5) pros go to where the money is in regards to comp (it's not Smite which self-promotes its own players, new talent is laughed out the door)

6) pornbrained (note: they now actively promote furry degen and ♥♥♥♥ which is a turnoff)

And for those that just wanna play the game you can expect 20 essays in chat spoken to why your build is bad or some military historical essay

A turd is a turd no matter how much shine you put on it. The player base for SMITE is that turd. You'll get the same ♥♥♥♥♥ but "different" game. Toxic players, people that ruin the game, et al. yada yada yada.

S1 looked terrible, and the item system was quite restrictive, S2 is fixing both these issues, and making it the easiest time for new comers to join.

Me and a bunch of my friends really enjoyed the alpha, some even having it as their first moba experience, I haven't played a moba since dota 7, and I've been looking for something to scratch that itch, Smite seems much easier to get into compared to current dota even for a dota veteran.

I actually appreciate that everything is being reset, redone and reworked, and I hope that content release slows down and becomes better paced, I hate it when games get too bloated, sometimes, less is more.

I think Hi-Rez is handling things quite well, and most complaints are coming from a vocal minority. I just wish that the season passes won't require 100 hours over 25 days of grind to complete, that will require a minimum of 4 hours a day, and it will alienate us who can't afford to put that much time into it, and once a game starts to try to force me into putting time into it, it starts to feel like a chore and more like a job, and that's when I quit. So please don't make your season pass feel like a job :zenoboysad:
