Finding coal?

I can't figure where to find coal to make a dye for the Ladies sign. I've got the teleporter and first other area opened and have checked around but kinda lost of what to do. Help please.

Go through the first teleporter and look around the edges of the cliffs for the coal and copper tiles. Dig down for those. Just make sure to get the hammer first if you haven't already yet though.

I'm not sure what it looks like. I know it's black. I thought I found it a few times but it was not the right one.
