Watch Dogs and GPU Temps
Was playing Watch Dogs today and noticed that my Nvidia 770 was running at 80 degrees Celsius. Most of my games I play usally run between 55 and 65 degrees. I know Watch Dogs is a pretty intensive game and I've been running it fairly well on ultra settings. Is anyone else getting similar temps on ultra?

My cards rated at a max temp of 98. I've read some opinions on other forums that with this card you really shouldn't be concerned until you hit 90+. Is that correct?

Any info is as always appreciated.

Nividia use a gpu boost on the gtx 770 and 80 degress is under normal nivida profiles is when it starts to throttle back the gpu boost under nvidia controll panel or your chosen overclocking tool afterburner gainwards expert 2 tool can can up the fan speeds etc to counter the problem

normal coolers from nivida never go above 50% fan speed my gainward gtx 770 never goes above 45% fan speed if you adjuest the fan profiles you will make the card run alot cooler at the expense of noise though

I'm running this P.O.S. game on a 780 TI and I'm getting about mid 70's on temp. I'm not sure about where the yellow zone is for these cards though but it's best not to push it too far. If you still have your owners manual it should say something in there about temps.

Out of curiousity what do you mean by "fairly well"?

I've got my EVGA version overclocked a bit and it'll get up to the 70 or 80s. Once I quit the game it goes back to about 40.

By "Fairly Well" I mean I have very little stuttering. Only time it realy stutters seems to be when its auto saving.

As for the specs of the cards, heres a link:

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-770/specifications

Max temp is supposed to be 98 celsius.

This is my card:

Only difference on my card from this is I have 4 gigs of VRAM.

I use the EVGA Precision Tool to control my GTX 680 temp on a curve.
I think the default fan control in the nvidia driver is inadequate, IMO, so I override it to slowly increase in speed starting at about 60C, and if it reaches 80C, the fan goes up to 90%.
Watchdogs pushes it to about 76 C, but I've never hit 80.

Yeah, the video cards can reach higher temps, but like all PC hardware, keeping it cooler is better, so I recommend fan control to keep it as low as possible.

This game literally gives me a headache. I've tried everything I can think of but nothing seems to fix or at least minimize the amount of tear and lag I get. Low settings with everything turned down or off or ultra with everything on it doesn't mater. I quit playing this damn game weeks ago I just keep checking forums to see if anything has been fixed or at least improved to playable. I sure as hell know it's not my rig.

What I really don't get is how AC4 Black Flag can look 10x better than this game and still run at 60+ fps without any tearing. I really think Ubisoft is catering to Microsoft and down playing it for the Xbone.

http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/gpu-boost-2/technology

on your 770 gtx thats the reason why your heat goes up on demanding games
the bost on the gpu clock speed is based on heat 80 degres is the higest temp that the card will cut down the gpu boost

adjusting you fan speed from defult of 45% at 80 degress up to even 55% or 60% will drop the overall temp of your 770 by about 8 degress

If Ubisoft were downplaying it for the sake of the consoles, then *everyone* would have bad performance problems, but you can find many posts, threads and videos that prove that isn't the case.

The real problem, IMO, is that it was designed largely for the 500 and 600 series of video cards - and you'll find most people (such as myself) who report good performance are using those series. In my case a GTX 680 with 4 GB vram.

But Ubisoft marketed it to make it sounds like the 700 series and Titans were gonna kill it, when they obviously had major problems with those video cards, which can also be easily proven through posts, threads and videos.

It wouldn't benefit Ubisoft any to have intentionally gimped it to make the console versions look better by comparison. That's just conspiracy theory with no basis, and there's far more evidence that they simply screwed up.

Ok,Using this tool now,let me know if I did it right.

1. I enabled software automatic fan control.

2. I left the first curve alone at 30 celsius and 40% fan speed. On the second curve I set it for 60 celsius and 65% fan speed. On the Third curve I set it for 80 celsius at 90% fan speed. The fourth curve(God I hope I never hit it) is 90 celsius at 100% fan speed.

Did I set that up right?

By the way ,thank you all for your help and insights.

sounds good altho im pritty sure u wont hit the 90 with the fan speeds up so high
the defult profile is a god balance for heat and less noise but exp with summer here i found its already 10 degress higher at idle so you couls proberly adjust it when the weather gets cooler
Søn of Jøn Jul 16, 2014 @ 8:12pm
Yeah, Martoq, that should do it, although you can also add more curve points if you want, to make the transition smoother.

NP and I hope it helps. :D:

And also what Trm said is good advice too.

Thanks again guys,it helped a lot, stabilzed at around 65-70 celsius.

My evga 780sc reference hits 100% fanspeed when it hits 65 degrees. It hovers around 67 on full load. This is the only game that pushes temps compared to other demanding games. Just a slight overclock/overvolt pushes it in the 70s.
cmh175 Jul 17, 2014 @ 10:47am
Yeah I can definitely seeing this game ramping up gpu heating. I use an Asus application that controls fan speeds in my rig, so it shoots everything up to about 90% when it gets to about 75 or so. And with the EVGA application I can adjust the gpu fan as well. As far as optimization goes this game is a steaming tird so it certainly requires tweaking, but it's manageable and shouldn't effect performance (too much).

I run this game with my GTX Titan BE, she's around 65~75 degrees. I think GTX770 is barely enough to run Ultra settings, so it's normal for GTX770 to be around 80 degrees.
