Should I play this, or just skip it and go straight to Watch Dogs 2?
Been keeping an eye on this game for a while. With Watch Dogs 2 out now, and seemingly getting a lot more positive reviews on launch compared to the original, should I just remove this game finally from my wishlist and jump straight to WD2 without playing WD1, or would I be missing out?

thanks.

WD is good for its plot and WD2 is even better for both its characters and the story, if you ask me. Yes, WD2 is quite costly, but I'm thinking about buying the gold edition in a month, even if there's no discount - and I think it's my money well spent. But our experiences may differ, obviously

This is one of my favorite games of all time and I recommend you to get it as soon as possible.

It's brand new. Give it a few months and it will drop in price.

I found the gameplay enjoyable enough in WD but I hated the story. Aiden Pearce is just too unsympathetic as the protagonist of the story. He's a scumbag, just the same as the people he's tracking down and murdering and yet the game and he tries to portray him as a vigilante, a good guy, an uncle trying to avenge the murder of his niece.

But he's a thief and a murderer who put his own family's safety in jeopardy. Had it not been this instance, it would have been another, but his family would have been hurt or worse by his actions eventually.

And killing fixers while claiming to be cleaning up Chicago is about as ironic as it gets when those guys have basically been hired to do the same. If you accept money to steal from someone or to kill someone, you're no better than they are. The game just constantly tried to make him a good guy when he's just about the worst person in the game.

Funny how you say that. Aiden was never written to be completely likeable or a true hero; he is there to show the hypocrisy/immorality of characters in open world action adventures such as Grand Theft Auto. It also critiques the fact that we consider those games to be escapist fantasies without acutally considering the morals (or the lack thereof) of what we are doing in game. Basically the premise of Aiden is this: what if those characters were actually real? What type of skills would they have? What morals would they have if they did the things we usually do in violent videog games? What type of impact and consequences would they actually have on the people around them? Because put it this way: living in a huge mansion afterwards with a harem of prosititutes at the end of killing and robbing a city seems a little unrealistic. Possible (You can make a GTA game about Pablo Escobar's life and not change a thing) but very improbable. This is what I loved the most about the game in the end: the sheer realism and the accurate portrayal of consequences in the end. [I'm not too sure if I would personally hate Aiden though: I see too much of my past self in him. If I had a violent childhood with an abusive father (like Aiden) I think I would have ended up just like him. And that would make me a hypocrite.]

If you want to read more about the game and the genius characterisation of Aiden, read this article. [unitedfederationofcharles.blogspot.co.nz]. Happy gaming! :wd::steamhappy:

P.S. you will not be the only person to have ever told me I read too deeply into things
P.P.S. I watched too much BBC Sherlock. Moffat has ruined me. He made me overanalyse thnigs.
P.P.P.S. to get back to your question spaneika I personally loved the game because of see above. But it took me a little while to like it (10hrs of playing, roundabout?). If you want to like things from the get go, skip to the second game.

Well, to each his own. The thing is, I realize Aiden is just as much of a villain as are his "targets", but it doesn't make the story bad in my eyes. We're all people, we make mistakes and so does Aiden, he isn't some hero in shining armour - and that is exactly what made me fall in love with WD. I love me some stories about humankind's failings and questionable moralities, and WD is the best I've encountered so far.
Still not trying to force anyone to love it, though - I don't think protagonists like Aiden are a poison of choice for many.
