If all are not killed there is at least some cases when that interferes with re-population, at least in MM7 and MM8. For example, in MM7, on the initial island if you successfully kill all of the flying bugs before taking a level-up, a whole bunch of flying bugs (not as many as initially but a lot) reappear. However, it you kill almost all but two get away and then you do the level-up, you get only the two that got away. There are other examples and I think it works the same in MM6, but I do not remember for certain.
Since I am trying to max experience and money on the island at that early stage (in the MM7 example), through, practice, I have become pretty good at not letting any of the flying bugs escape. It takes some precision targeting to prioritize wounded ones (unless the wound is slight and they keep coming), not letting the ones you are currently shooting at get too close (creating a survival problem) or too far away and giving everyone bows. Judicious use of the Mage's Fire Bolt as well as giving the bows a fire damage augmentation really helps. Use of Bless (for accuracy) seems to be a must as well. I find it fun, at least for me.
Similar tactical challenges exist throughout the MM6 game, even though I do not remember any quick re-spawns like in MM7 and MM8, especially in some of the huge dungeons... love the MM6 game, even compared to current games.
MM6 is also a complete gaming experience with no DRM or other "Mickey Mouse" security abuse.
