It's not an old game. Quite the opposite. And it presumably runs fine on modern operating systems... so why?

GOG has nothing to do with old games. See Stalker 2, Cyberpunk 2077 ... it's about DRM free games with no strings attached (e.g. Steam client)

Yes, precisely this. I'm a member of some kickstarter game communities, most notably Bloodstained, and people always insist on having a GoG option precisely because they dont like Steam. Age isn't a factor.
