Should I play The Dark Eye first?
If I understood correctly, the worlds are the same? Should I play The Dark Eye first to fully appreciate the game?

I've been meaning to play it, but just never got to it.

What do you mean The Dark Eye? From my understanding The Dark Eye is a whole universe, not a specific game or anything. I've been playing this and I don't know much about that universe other than that it is fantasy based. Haven't run into any issues understanding anything as a result, but I'm sure some of these locations will be a bit more interesting if you have seen them in other stuff before.

Sorry, I meant the game "The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav".

I think playing Chains of Satinav first will enhance your enjoyment with this one. It´s not only the Dark Eye background but some Characters and some minor stuff carries over.

Yes, you definitely should. In other case, characters would be unfamiliar and their intentions unclear.

Nah, you don't have to at all. I'm in the Press and I'm almost done beating it. I never played the originals and this is gripping me and very fun.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I think I'm gonna play through The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav first.

The first game is great too, so there is really no reason not to play it; assuming you have the cash for both.

Looking at the trailer, it seems like it's a half direct sequel, so you probably should

You don't have to, but you should. I picked up Chains of Satinav on the Summer Sale wanting to play it before Memoria and I don't regret it.

Half of this game is a sequel and half (the part with Sadja) is a completely new story, new characters etc., but there are a lot of references to the previous Chains of Satinav game and even other Daedalic games, like The Night of the Rabbit. You'll get more from this game and well, Chains of Satinav is a game worth knowing, even despite the animations. ;)

I definiteley plan on playing both, but wanted to double check anyway; I realize the world and some of the characters between the two are the same, but the story IS self contained enough that I would be able to play Memoria first, and then return to Chains of Satinav as a sort of prequel?
I absolutely intend to play Chains of Satinav eventually as every Daedalic game I've played so far has blown me away, but in all honestly Memoria interests me more right now
Hopefully playing them in that order wouldn't totally ruin the experience?
Thanks in advance!

I think so, yes. :) Although seeing Memoria first, you might get discouraged by the animations in Chains of Satinav. It's a really good game, but those animations are appalling. I finally got to immerse with it, when I learned to look away when somebody was talking, walking etc. and admire the backgrounds instead. True story. Regardless however, I still think highly of that title.

Memoria has some spoilers though. You know what happens with Nuri, and Geron talks a lot about the previous events when he's with her at the Waterfall. I think they wanted to give some of the background to new players. If you play Memoria first, the story in Chains of Satinav won't be that new to you.

Cool, glad I saw this topic...didn't realize until now that I own many games from Daedalic, however I missed the first one of this world. Think I'll grab both.

Memoria will spoil Chains of Satinav's ending, since it picks up right where the first game leaves off. You CAN enjoy Memoria without playing Satinav. But you will enjoy Satinav more if you play it first.

Geron and Nuri are the main characters of Chains of Satinav. The game tells the story of a birdcatcher who meets the fairy Nuri and sets out to stop the Seer which is trapped into a Ravens' body. Memoria picks up where Chains of Satinav ended
