Thanks for the info. I was looking for that one.
I know how you feel - I was going crazy searching each new area for that damn shovel. xD
1. The second you see/hear an enemy crouch (use toggle-crouch) and get behind something (tree or solid bush). You should be a considerable distance away (think max short-bow firing range) and use zoom to count the number of enemies and note their patrol patterns.
2.Sneak from cover to cover while the nearest enemy's back is turned. While the wind is blowing WALK, don't run, and then crouch again as soon as it dies. Running makes you more visible from a distance, which can alert the enemies farther away.
3. Sneak up behind the nearest enemy and stab him in the back, then get back behind cover. Rinse and repeat until all enemies in the group are dead. If you mistimed your backstab and you think the enemy will turn around before you can reach him, throw your tomahawk from a distance.
4. you can "stealth snipe" if enemies are far enough apart from each other. First, you need to be far away from the enemy (the max distance of the short-bow is about how far you should be), use one of the bows (shot or long both work), the target enemy's nearest "partner" should be far enough that he can't shoot you. Shoot the nearer enemy in the head when his back is turned. The enemy should die in one shot and his buddy will not be alerted.
5. Indians: the moment you hear the bird hoots, crouch and get behind cover. You never encounter Indians in the open, they always utilize cover. First, just listen, and determine where the Indians are located, zoom in on the area and try to see any slow-moving dark figures. Second, flank them by staying far away from the area you identified as their hiding spot. Make a WIDE circle around their spot and get behind them. At this point, you should be able to easily see them patrolling behind their cover. I usually try to stealth snipe the farthest one first and then sneak in for a back stab on the last one.
The worst are the rock piles found out in the middle of nowhere. Huge pain in the ass to track all of those down.
They did not respawn in the beach starting area, also not at first in the Fort Henry area. But they are now.
EDIT IN:
-- Confirmed that Conquistadors do respawn if you exit the game and then reload the save.
-- Some random skeletons also respawn if you exit the game and then reload the save and enter into Otherworldly realm.
I'm going to bet you that if you leave an area and return some of the conquistadors will respawn. Not the placed ones and not always at the same place or number, but that they do.
The key question is does fast travel within an area lead to respawns. Now I do know that one area that normally has 3 and that normally but not always respawns with three just below Fort Henry, did one time respawn with 1 conquistador, I think that was after I spent forever looking for a last chest and just to see if chests respawn (not sure, seems like some findings are random respawns on exit and load perhaps) and I had I believe fast traveled a few times. No guarantees, but that's how it seems. Since I'm trying to enjoy the game, I don't really feel like wasting too much time confirming this. Since they respawn on exit and reload, which is what I prefer, that's good enough. I suspect that means that given enough time, enough fast travel, and going in and out of an area, they will respawn.
That is really odd - I have not had a single Spaniard respawn in the entirety of my game, although I am not sure about the Indians (bastards are always in tricky spots, so I am never sure if they respawn, or if it is just another group I have missed). Although, with the skeletons, keep in mind that I already did say that they respawn on this forum.
Good thing -- defeated spaniards provide ammo, weapons, gold. If you do not choose drop player loot on player death, the spaniards respawning provides the only setback to death. It also counters the tedium that would set in if they didn't respawn at all. This is in addition to respawn on game exit and reload of save. A note found in the game says it does what is confirmed above -- asDedlok mentioned. So this one is intended.
It would seem thematic for them to respawn on changing maps and returning then. But I have not confirmed this. Also, IMHO, it allows the game to be just played for entertainment afterwards, if the devs should decide it. I think that with some modifications, they could easily put other single player game modes in here, say after you complete the quest. That's a way to make more money out of it. Now, I am nowhere near done the game, I decided to restart a new game in Normal difficulty, and try something different when talking to the Maiden in Red. I have not been past Fort Henry, although I had cleared all of Fort Henry last game. I had not yet gone through the South Gate though I had cleansed it. So I'll update on any important things on this play thru. But those things I confirmed have happened in both games. Both games though were played after the 1.4 patch, both in part after 1.4b.
