I wouldn't believe much the "somehow looks better" part, unless you aren't using native resolution on your monitor, or some other things going on. This stuff is a trade-off between getting higher FPS vs. just having higher quality on lower FPS (unless it's already at lowest settings and still having low FPS, then it's about the rest of your hardware, drivers and settings).
Some people can go very far to get more FPS, while others can't stand lowering quality, so it's subjective, but options are good.
