Myth: You dont get loot if you did not touch the boss?

So I have never not been able to open the chest at the end of a dungeon but I heard you wont be able to open it, if you did not touch the boss.
We had just a group where someone could not wait and started the boss before everyone was present.
We did reset but I am still curious what is actually the real mechanic here.
Does he need to attack the boss for the chest to be opened?
Cause it spawns anyway no matter what so I am wondering............

Yes, it is. You have to hit the boss at least one time to get a reward.

I had once the same issue, one of the Group dont wait and I dont come in. After boss was was down I wasnt able to open the chest...

I had two separate experiences with this.

1. I was a scrub and did not know where the boundary for where the boss arena was, so I never attacked the boss and the bot in our group just started the fight. The group carried, but it won't let you open the chest. Something along the lines of "not enough contribution" if you try to interact with it.

2. As a late night degenerate gamer, I ended up in a group full of only Chinese speaking players, but I missed some geysers on Tyrant's. I had to port back to town and then back into the instance to catch up with the group. They started without me, and man they were blasting. Could not open the chest.

Although I just had a nice experience where a full group of Chinese players intentionally wiped to let me get loot. Couldn't understand what they were saying, but I knew they were talking about me because I was party member #1 and they kept saying 1.

Not a myth.

Also side note: I have also had an experience where I opened a chest, but I teleported out of the dungeon via the Exit button instead of the big purple portal since the animation is much faster. I ended up not getting any loot despite opening the chest. Guessing it didn't register.
