From what i've seen the reward isn't that good either...but yeah it's just another thing that favours DPS in this game.

So funny thing about classes... there are no tanks or healers, there are only shields or wands. That's one half of your class setup, a class that still depends on gear, gear that could be geared for DPS. If you don't do the DPS, get gear that lets you. If you want to focus on tank gear with low damage, settle for not getting the top of the leaderboard in a DPS race to see who can kill the boss the fastest. Like it's that simple. The contest is clearly based around damage, not tanking.

That said, even tank builds can output good damage. Shield/GS can fall back on their GS skills and deal tons of DPS. Just swap your skills to main greatsword. Shield/Wand tanks can utilize the wand's curse builds to deal high damage, you can even kill them in under 3 minutes like other wand players on the leaderboards have, and there's specific wands and gear that enhance your curse powers. The key here is equipping the right passives.

Or just go the route of unequipping one of your weapons and competing as a solo weapon class. There are people competing using Shield only, Greatsword only, Wand only, etc. So you can even take top of the leaderboard and get extra prizes for being the "best shield only player". But if you want to murder the boss in under 3 minutes? Get DPS gear and wear it.

I think what the OP is asking is why is there a DPS check in it? And that is a fair question to ask.
