Remember: Guild PvP is the endagame here, sooo....
Pay to Fast in PvP where gear level / stats is important just means Pay to Win.
General reason:
If you team die then you have to respawn and come back when the other team can continue to progress so you lose even more time (if not your stuff in some games). You lose cause they have more gear than you cause they were able to progress faster.
In every single PvP MMO, the "starting rush" is probably the most important thing to prepare and succeed. It will determine how many people will be interested in your guild (so more people to recruit), how other guilds will see you (powerful or not), how your general guild economy will be and so on... a successful rush just puts you in the top 25% guilds of your server easily even if you are trash at the game.
Reason in Throne & Liberty:
Having better gear faster, will mean that you will control some areas where your guild will unlock more bosses to kill. Which means that they'll get more loot per day / week than other guilds. That's called "snowball". You get a lead so you can become even more powerful than others. So you'll continue to win vs others and get even more things, so you'll continue to win.
There's a reason why they decided to split players between "early access 5 days" servers and "free 2 play players" servers... starting a MMO 5 days before other players is just totally p2w cause there's less people to farm spots, so you get faster XP, more loot, more ressources,, you can freely farm and become even more powerful.
You can also start to control the economy of the server and set everything up to stay ahead of others. Even more if there's "daily farm" where if you miss one day you can't catch up.
Once again that's just the "starting rush", managed enough guilds in multiple MMOs to know that the start is the most important thing.
For all those reason that's why in any PvP game "Pay to Fast" means "Pay to Win" simple as that. In PvE games without any leaderboard or competition... it's another story it can be "Pay to Fast" but it can also be "Pay to Progress" cause the progression is nearly impossible without paying.
------I'm surprised you found a reason to cry about them releasing the game 5 days early for pre-orders... like really?
