Does anyone know how to get this game to recognize a video game controller other than mouse and keyboard

You must use programs like Xpadder or Joy2key in order to simulate the keyboard and mouse using your gamepad.

Change the control setting to keyboard + gamepad and configure the buttons. The game uses directinput so by default it works with older pads like the Logitech rumblepad. 360 controller works for the most part - triggers and the right stick don't work, rest maps properly.
