they're basicly the fox in skyrim
people think they lead you to stuff, but they don't
Pshhh. Tinker Bell is the original OG.
Thank you so much for saying that. I can confirm that they do indeed take you to the machine parts as I only needed one on my central island, but I could not find it for the life of me. I followed a firefly after you said that, and sure enough there were a large cluster of fireflies all converging on that one part.
Yeah, and the other thing I'd point out is that they don't just roam around close to the ground either, but higher in the sky too, like the air balloons. If there's only one piece left on an island then you might spot quite a few of them clustered together in the sky around it.
And, yes, I'm pretty certain that they're supposed to be will o' the wisps of various folklore who usually either lead travellers astray, or to great riches (the fragment pieces in this case).
It is kinda tricky to follow them when there are lots of pieces remaining on the island. I'm pretty sure on a number of occasions I started heading in the direction one was moving only to pick up another heading to a different location... but I agree when there's only one piece left they're really useful and it looks pretty cool if you see a few gently floating over the hillsides converging on a point. I think they give you just the right level of guidance.
I guess the biggest question is can the robots can cross water and guard any fragments there or not? I have seen a dog run through a shallow "pond", but I'm assuming that the main hunting parties are programmed not to wander into water. Either way, the islands never seem to be far from the mainland and you would be able to see the white smoke fairly easily..
... on a further sidenote, I did see a house out at sea.. complete with underwater smoking fire... :-S
I have had a couple of fragments right on the edge of the island on the slopes down to the sea and these were guarded by two lonely robots... which were by far the easiest to take out as there were no other robots in sight meaning I could basically stroll in with a shotgun.
