It's pretty addicting, but the problem is the predatory monetization. Every item has a level and as you level items, they gain additional bonuses. Same goes with Heroes. They level, and they gain everything from hp, armor, stamina gain, and even additional starting bags. How do you level items? You open up chests and they randomly spawn "cards" with which you level the items. You also need gold to do so, limiting the advancement. This means that those that have played longer and have plopped down cash will be ahead of those just starting out.
I don't think any of these are direct competitors to Backpack Battles since they will never be competitive as long as they charge money for power.
I've been playing lots of mobile games, along with its tendency of having sh*tty economy model. I'd say on the upgrade part, it's fair to say that Backpack Brawl is Play to Win if anything. And it's a casual asynchronized PvP too, even with ranked battles. Sure you can whale and all, but for a game that caliber it's just meaningless. I haven't spend a cent, yet almost 9/10 of my losses are due to my own hubris. It's subjective, but why bother chasing an insane rank rather than making a unique build on that game?
For a free to play game, it's doing okay.
HOWEVER
The premium currency grind for unlocking characters are SH*T, man. But that's just it. I can try them when they're on weekly free rotation anyway.
To be fair, It's a possibility in asynchronized PVP, as all you need to do is download the ghost data.
