Question about items eating other items

So how exactly does this work?

Ill have say a sword next to a goobert for example and then suddenly at the end of a round it will absorb the sword.

Thats just one example. ive seen it happen with many other items i had. How does this work? How do i know if i put an item next to another it will or wont get eaten by another item?

should give you a better understanding, as to what is going on.

If you see a golden line between them, it means they'll combine, if its green it means one will be changed while the other remains (there's only a handful of these).
If you mouse over an item and another item on screen can combine with it (but they aren't next to one another) a blue line will point from each item to the other.

you can also prevent combination by locking item by right clicking them. Usually you do want to combine though unless you are saving the item for another combination.
