""I expected that as you rank up, the initial bag of items would improve or new items would be unlocked or whatever" this would break the game."
- No, this would not break the game if the game gets harder. Harder game = stronger and faster start.
This game is in the vein of a PvP game (mind you, not live, you're playing against others that at some point was at the same win/loss count). In ranked, progression COULD work, except they would have to make it so you lost items you've gained access to if you went down in rank, which would feel bad for the player, otherwise you'd have players who got to a higher rank once, dropping back down and just outright winning because that player has something most others at the rank doesn't.
But that is all a moot point when you consider that the game also has unranked, which means if progression like you're talking about was a thing, there'd be people with access to items others didn't have access to.
If the game got a pure PvE mode at some point (like for example hearthstone did after some years) some kind of progression system exclusive to that mode could most definitely work, but I doubt an entirely new mode is on the devs radar at this point in time.
I am a bit shocked to find there are in fact no upgrades / no meta-progression?
It feels disappointing... like playing Vampire Survivors, but nothing changes/grows/evolves. The first few games are gonna be exactly the same as any number of games. (other than what you learn from playing, of course).
(it's basically Hearthstone Battlegrounds)
The game does not have asynchronous pvp as you say. Asynchronous pvp is what Fire emblem Engage has, to give you an example and it is when the other player can make their move without you needing to be present. But this game is an auto-battler, here there is no other player on the other side waiting to make their move, but rather the game system collects the profiles of the players and uses them to make them fight with yours.
So, yes, the game would be fair even if players moved up the ranks and started with more powerful builds, since pvp would match players of the same rank.
That's litterally what it is.
Except what happens the moment someone drops in rank again? (And that can happen)
Do we take away the progression they got? That would feel bad for the player losing it, so the only other option is letting them keep it, in which case, they now have an advantage over the other people in the rank they droppped to.
Also definition of asynchronous according to google: "not existing or occurring at the same time." Cambridge Dictionary has a very similar definition.
I don't care what you WANT asynchronous to mean, the word asynchronous fits this game.
