How does potions works ?
Are they only one single time use ?

What does it means that "after being consumed also applies the star effect wihtout being consumed" ?
That's kinda confusing.

Also are they really needed or worth it ?

If you click on the potion you will see a star on top, if you put another potion there the star potion gets triggered without being used when the potion below is used. So you generally want to stack potions on top of each other with the wors one at the bottom. Better yet put it in the potion belt for a chance of multitriggers.

Single potions are usually not overly powerful but with belts and stacks they can be very powerful, also depends on which potion, some builds need poison some need stamina, etc.

Okay thanks i also saw someone doing it so was a bit more clear to seem a bit complicated as potentially the chain of potions can be ruined

Potion bag changed the way it works, no longer multi triggers, but cleanses debuffs on first and 4th potion trigger.

@op, potions are, like many items in the game, highly situational. Some builds get by focusing on potions, others might grab one or two if they're on sale. If you find yourself needing just a little bump to win a potion might get you there.

in a build the potions are supposed to be multi triggerable. the bottom potion of a stack is supposed to trigger evrery potion to the top. meaning you get multiple free potions that do different things. in reality though they tend to be weak unless you know what your doing or get lucky and get a scythe or shield to boost your specific potion.
I would suggest staying away unless you want a challenge or bored and feel like you tried everything else. not to say they can't work or aren't particularly good when built properly but its one of the more difficult builds to pull off atm.
otherwise everything that fish guy said is true and picking up a potion on sale is always worth it. since anything you buy on sale sells for the same amount and sometimes they can give that extra boost your build needs.
