Can I play co-op with pirate friend?

Well, my friend downloaded pirate game (i have The Forest bought on steam) and we want to play some coop. Is it possible to play with him like that?

I doubt you will get anyone giving you advice on how to not support the devs, tell your friend to buy the game, it's cheap enough.
