If you do decide to go with commands, you would need to enable cheats in your settings and type "developermodeon" blindly at the main menu. There's no text box to enter this, you just type it randomly while sitting at the title screen. If it's successfully been turned on, pressing f1 should let you see the console and check that its on. Then you can load up the save you plan to tinker with. If you wanted the enemies to not spawn, you'd enter the command "enemies off", if you want them back it's just "enemies on". If you want them to spawn, but only sometimes you can try "vegetarianmode" at the main menu or in game. If it worked correctly, vegetarian mode means that enemies will only spawn at night but not during the daytime.
