The tong-ah: a solution to sighting for the modern bow
In Korean archery, marksmen used to use a split bamboo tube to serve as a launching ramp for their arrows. This allowed them to overdraw shorter and lighter arrows, allowing them to shoot with greater velocity and all the benefits that that entails (less visibility, more penetrative capacity, greater range etc). Where am I going with this?

The modern bow is sighted according to the modern arrows, which are longer, perhaps 28-32-inch fiberglass arrows. Their length means that they extend farther past the riser and they're easier to sight on this bare bow for this reason. When using primitive/simple arrows, the gap is larger and it's harder to sight.

BUT WHAT IF

Our survival expert TV star man had the foresight to use the plane axe or machete, or any edged object really, to hollow out a tube to use as a tong-ah? He could then mill it to the length that the modern bow is strung for (28-32 inches as opposed to the shorter primitive arrow) and be able to use the tip of the tong-ah as sighting when using a primitive arrow.

This is a logical workaround to be able to shoot the shorter arrows on the modern bow if our character wouldn't whittle a sight or arrow rest for the modern bow (as wood is a tenuous material for that). Obviously being a modern recurve bow, the riser has slots for these enhancements, but the tong-ah is a more appropriately low-tech solution and would allow the survivor to shoot his homemade arrows with greater accuracy.

Here's a good close up on the tong-ah showing its mechanism and use. Imagine it being used to sight the modern bow:
