Player Names toggle in options
Please make it so we have server-level control over when/how player names appear.
Things like,

Names appear:
-Always
-Always within X meters
-With line of sight
-With line of sight (unless sneaking)
-Within X meters + LoS + Sneak

Which gets applied to all players in the server.

This makes the PvE more interesting when you are having skirmishes or encounters in the middle of the night, or in caves. You're running through caves, get ambushed, and suddenly you're split up! Now instead of resolving the confusion by seeing a name through solid rock or pitch dark, you have to actually search for them in the environment. It's risky, it's dangerous, maybe you will get lost too. Do you get what I'm getting at here? Seeing names all the time is way too meta for a game which emphasizes a survival experience. Especially when other players keep turning this game into Bob Vila's Island Cabin Hugfest Simulator 2018, and I'm out here trying to experience Cannibal Holocaust and Green Inferno with my friends who like to be challanged.

This has appeal and application to both PvE style play, as well as PvP.
If you don't like PvP, please go make your own thread about how much you dislike it.
Nobody is forcing you to play PvP style, and if you don't like it, you can play in your own server. But for those of us who do like it, and have supported this game from the beginning, I feel like we are constantly outright ignored by the devs, in favor of creative-mode players.
To the contrary, there are many servers out there who force PvE on players; I've literally been kicked from multiple servers before because instead of helping some OCD player build a new deck on the back of their imaginary beach-front mansion, I want to go exploring the island and caves. (also on that note, the game setup itself is far too meta, you need to make it so cave items get shuffled around so speed-running-griefers etc can't min/max items).

I want survival situations which induce panic, confusion, yelling, and fear. It's what survival games are supposed to be about. If I wanted a survival game as easy and comfy as Minecraft, I'd go play Minecraft. Or I suppose now, The Forest, since they are basically the same thing, except Minecraft lets you modify the terrain. For players who have been here since the start, the game offers little challenge now, except for ones self-imposed by the player. Friends I've played with would like to do things like build our own "tribes", our own villages, and go to war with each other with clubs, bows, arrows, torches. We want our own "Lord of the Flies" scenarios to play out, but we can't ever hope for it, because the co-op imperative is forced on all players. I am simply asking for some more variety of choice in how I experience The Forest.

Instead of getting updates which makes the ecosystem seem more immersive (animals+cannibals needing to eat, sleep, drink, etc), making it so players can travel to the top of the mountains, having cannibals swim, generally instead of anything to enhance the survival aspect of this game, we get this thing[proxy.duckduckgo.com] made of wood, hang gliders (didn't creative players already get zip-lines for moving around??), and other doodads that do not enhance the survival aspect of this game. How soon until you can drive the wooden car around the island??

Please, give players some more control over how they want to play The Forest.

If you like The Forest as it is? You don't have to change anything!
And nothing will change for you. You can stay in your hugbox and nobody will bother you because you'll kick anybody who doesn't play the way you demand anyways.
If you want more of a PvE or PvP challenge? Too bad so sad thanks for the money here's a wooden car instead lololol!

This would be an incredibly easy change to make to the game.
Literally just a couple conditions under which a player's name is rendered.
And if you (dev) have time and effort to include Buicks and a wife and dog made of wood, you sure as hell have time to consider putting in something like this!

I would like to use an in-game name instead of my Steam name.
