This might not be a bad thing, but it sounds like it is a very narrow space for it to be really working fine. As suggested, you do not want to give away too much. Imho good, but maybe tricky to pull of just right?
Some will hate it, some will love it, as always, as to be expected, as is normal... They maybe could present it as an option?
This is especially true if you are targeting more than just high-end platforms, as one one graphical option reduction can drastically change how something like this is perceived.
(The difference between lighting, for example, may completely change the look and feel.)
