[SUGGESTION]: Pitch/wood tar from sap to keep torches alight for longer
EDIT: 3 posts in for actual idea

Hear me out.

This is a simple suggestion. It always annoyed me that a stick wrapped in cloth would only burn for a short amount of time, and would go out very soon after a few attacks (that part is understandable.)

I thought it would be a great idea to be able to mix Tree Sap, Booze and Cloth to sort of approximate "Pitch" - a plant-derived waxy fuel - so that you could make the torch last longer.

The Booze is included as a sacrifice in order to make your torch last longer. Tree Sap + Cloth is ridiculous for instance, due to availability. Booze being a basic solvent...

~

In reality, plant-derived Pitch is formed from burning sap-rich trees and extracting the waxy residue from the ashes. So that is an option - add Sap to a fire - but Pitch would then need to have multiple uses, in order to be a viable item in your inventory. It has little use other than a strong glue and we have Sap for that.

This is why I suggest it as Sap + Cloth + Booze - just as a simple upgrade to a burning stick.

->

To give perspective, I have completely exhausted my supplies of cloth just exploring caves and re-lighting torches. It is very, very frustrating. I thought this, being an easy sacrificial upgrade, was unintrusive, simple, and very useful.

~

If there are issues with balance - you only want the torch to stay alight for a short time to make it valuable - please post (preferably Devs but players too).

TL;DR?

Add Sap + Booze + Cloth to Upgraded Stick to make the flaming torch last longer. Very useful in caves and a really simple upgrade.

I didn't know where to post this because the suggestions thread is just one big bunch of posts that will get buried. Thought it better to post it in general.

You can make it last longer with booze....

Ok so I spent hours looking this up and testing it to no avail.

Then I did the logical thing and started a new game, and voilà, I could add booze to my stick.

Currently, booze doesn't go on my crafting pad with the upgraded stick at all. The only way I can make it last longer is to add more and more cloth (hence the suggestion).

So I probably have a bugged/gimped save, or the wrong inventory items when an update was implemented.

Thanks for your input Bossgamerjesse, I appreciate it and it helped to figure it out :)

BUT:

==> even with Booze the torch still does bugger-all when you're actually swinging it. It's maybe 4-5 more swings. My idea with "Pitch" was that you could add something to the Stick to make it last MUCH longer, but there'd need to be a significant cost.

Maybe combining enough Booze + Sap could craft an item similar to Sap that'd create a major boost to burn-time, and you could add it to any weapon that could be wrapped with cloth. A rare resource reserved exclusively (for instance) for caves.

It's just a matter of balancing it and making it seem legitimately important and useful.
I've always thought a way to prolong burning *melee* weapons was a great idea, but it's hard to think of how to implement it. Thus my post. Hope anyone considers it.

I like the idea too. And with it being waxy, it could last longer in wet caves where they go out right after lighting.

This would be good as an alternative to cloth and booze or as something in a primitive only mode.

With there being no distinction between indoor and outdoor with respect to rain this would be extremely helpful.
