Best Way to Collect Leaves

So, I've been playing the game for about a year now, and I've run into a problem. I don't know if they've been slowly been leading up to this, but it's nearly become impossible to collect leaves. Even if I cut down a bush, I only get 2 leaves tops. Why? You'd think with a bush you'd at least get 10 or so leaves, and not 1 or 2. Is it my game? And does anyone have any tips for collecting them faster?

Best way to collect leaves is with the repair hammer. Head to a bush heavy location like around geese lake and just whack away. Doesn't use stamina and you get more leaves per bush that way. I literally have thousands of leaves on my saves.
