Description:

"Attempting multiplayer results in "Steam not initialized. Try launching the game from Steam.""
However, I AM launching the game through Steam. I'm doing nothing different than what I've been doing for the past thousand and a half hours in this game, was playing on a dedicated server just earlier today in fact, but Steam had an update and when I tried to play The Forest again...this happens.
On another note I seem to not be fully sync with Steam because when I go to SINGLE player, it lists me as "anonymous" and none of my saves are there, but if I click that little arrow it switches to my like 15 digit ID number and I have my files back; so I'm not sure what that is indicative of.

I've tried all the usual jazz, game files verified through Steam, re-installed both Steam and The Forest; tried running as administrator, not as administrator; in compatibility mode, not in compatibility mode; wondering what I should hit up next.


Expected result:
Be able to join (or even host) multiplayer

Repro rate:
at the moment, %100

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Load The Forest
2.Click "join game"
3. Error message ""Steam not initialized. Try launching the game from Steam.""
4. The error message does not go away, and no button or click will remove it; I simply have to force close the game
5. Cry



Computer Specs
OS(and build): Windows Server 2003 (XP X64 SP2)
GPU:Nvidia GT630
Driver:There's drivers for so many things, which driver do you want?
CPU:Intel I7 920 @2.67GHz (4 core, 8 thread)
Ram: 16 GB

I have seen this issue in other games.

Main issues causing this were:
- steam beta
- starting steam in admin mode or starting game in admin mode
- being offline in the friends (not talking about offline mode. Literally set youself to offline in the friends tab)
- antivirus blocking gameoverlay (steam file)
- launch options
- messing with .exe of the game (adding special launch options directly there instead of using steam launch options)

I have forgot others tho. ^ You might check if any of this causes your problem

- i am not in beta
- like I said in the post I've tried both in admin and not in admin mode for both steam and the forest
- i always flicker between offline and online depending on when I wake up and go to sleep if I remember to set it; never affected me like this before; and messing with it now isn't seeming to help :'(
- antivirus not an issue (ssssshhh, don't worry about it)
- launch options? how so?
- haven't messed with the .exe's for like ANYTHING recently; up until it stopped working yesterday and AFTER that I did a re-install of both the forest and steam; then I was trying to run in compatibility mode and admin mode and not admin mode and such

I don't know, might be absolute nonsens, but could it be someone on the server you were on did something with your account? 😳 might be also nonsens, but have you tried to add the game manually to steam again, just like a non steam game?

yeah I'm the only one on this computer and it stopped working in the space of a few hours; I took a break from building to eat something while I watched something and when I went to go back to The Forest; Steam was hey: "hey, got this update for ya", after which my account seems all ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.

I've also noticed that attempting to "join game" on somebody playing The Forest from my friends list simply results in steam attempting to open another instance of The Forest, even though it's already open, which it realizes after a couple seconds and cancels the attempt; so just nothing happens...

It was after steam update = steam issue I guess :D
I doubt that the forest devs can do anything about this ;d
(I remember when steam patch broke special puzzles than grant skins in don't starve together and it took them 3+ days to fix)

yeah I figured so but I couldn't find a way to report bugs on steam itself; it was the most fukcing frustingtang thing I have attempted in awhile; I eventually found a way to make a "help ticket" after I had already made this; I have linked this to them there so it's almost just a trusted url as a place to write some ♥♥♥♥ really; but also I was hoping for an easy fix I just overlooked but eh :\

yeah.... steam has removed the way to contact support in most of cases ;-;
I think that getting steam ban (not the forum ban. The ban on whole steam) and game refund are only ways to contact steam support now ;d

I hate this trend in most big companies; not sure where it started but I guess they all went: "hey, those other guys have no accountability to their customers, why should we!"

I have been banned for spam... Contacted support...
Support said that I shouldn't contact him because he can't do anything about ban ;-;
On the ban I have had info to contact support -> made screenshot and asked him about it -> he ignored me.
I have asked how to contact english support -> he said old way which was removed... (+ he said that english support can't help too)
I have asked again for english support -> he ignored me ;-;
2 days later english support contacted me and I have got unban.
