can't continue multiplayer game

so, i've played with two friends yesterday, then we saved, and we wanted to continue today, so i've hosted the game again with the save (continue).
everyone was in the lobby, but as i hit the "start game" - button, the other two got disconnected.

it works fine if i start a new game, but any savegame doesn't work.

Have u tried letting them join u via the, i dunno how to describe. Sneaky way of joining when u arent invited? xD

There is an option if they look at u in the friends list, right click and it says, "Join game" and thats without an invite lol. If that doesnt work... have u sent an invite to them and that doesnt work either?

@james yes, we tried both. we tried everything. at first i had a private game (only being able to join by invite), later i made an open game, they tried to join me via server browser, invite or direct join. always with "connection lost" or something similar.
tried it while the game was running, while in the lobby, while loading the save up and never moving, or everyone going into singleplayer first.

what fixed the issue was indeed, that everyone had to restart steam.

Wow this was old lol. Yeah ive heard of that fix that Gabgab01 said, to close and restart Steam.
