The hole (SPOILER ALERT)

Just a heads up: Somewhere on the map there is a huge hole in the ground and it seems quite obvious that I need to go in it to bring the story along. I am however creeped out by the cavesystem which is the obvious way into it, so I had the brilliant idea to simply build my way down there.
Can't be done. About 5-10 meters down from the rim no more stairs can be built. Meaning, I can't build any deeper than that, only horisontally.
And since there is still atleast 40 meters more down, I won't survive the rest of the descent which makes the whole ordeal a relatively big waste of time.

You'll have to get into caves anyway. Game requires 3 items for you to gather in the caves in order to get the ending. As an encouragement i can say that enemies down there don't respawn and if you gather stones, sticks and leaves you can build savepoints down there. Face your fears, civilize the frak out of natives.
