Fan Theory: The cannibals/mutants are actually demons

Spoilers, duh.

The whole motto of Sons of the Forest is "fight demons". You can find a crucifix that if used near the cannibals, it sets them on fire.

In The Forest, the cannibals seem to have a strange hatred for the Christian missionaries.

In Cave 10 you can find a page that has been torn out of a bible that says "Don't be afraid, just believe."

One could argue that the Death Obelisk's ability to resurrect the dead at the cost of a living sacrifice is somewhat demonic in nature.

Of course, this could all just be a stretch, and at the end of the time the crucifix in Sons is the only for-sure evidence I have for this theory. But it's still interesting nonetheless.

The crucifix in SotF doesn't work against any cannibals. It works only on the demon mutants, which makes sense; they're demons.
That does kind of deconstruct your theory about the cannibals being demons. However, I do think that there is something weird about the Christian missionaries having such a large presence. Possible that demons at one point existed on the island, but are now gone for an unknown reason, especially with the crucifix being an object you can find in The Forest, and the final cave in the game being nicknamed the Hell Cave.
Something to think about.
