Custom building could be better

I decided to try my hand at custom building today. Sat down a custom foundation and realized I made it a bit too square-ish than I wanted. No problem, I'll just build onto it. Except I can't.

So I built some custom walls, and apparently, you have to press R to cycle between regular walls and walls with doors/windows before you place them down. I didn't know this until I had already built two, and the only way you can dismantle structures is to destroy them with your axe, wasting all of the resources.

I just built a custom roof, and spent all this time collecting the logs for it - and there's an ugly gap in-between the roof and the house itself. I'll probably have to destroy the roof to get it right, making all that work I did for nothing.

It seems a little harsh to not give the player the materials they spent when base placement can be finicky at times. And I wish it went into a bit more detail with how custom building worked, too.

I know this game probably isn't being updated anymore because the devs are so busy working on Sons of The Forest, but it'd be nice.

the building mechanic is all about planning ahead, knowledge, experience and error trials, as for walls you don't cycle them before placing the blueprints its after you place it down but a good trick to keep in mind(if you are alone or with friends only) you can leave one material needed in all of your blueprints before you decide to complete them and are sure you don't want to add anything more into it. you can end up with stuff like this and its really easy to do. there almost no limit as to where your imagination will lead you if you think outside the box, believe it or not but nothing can buy experience. as for your gap in roof, if your foundation and or walls where the roof lay on aren't symmetrical both side, you will always end up with an ugly roof with more than just a gap but when its not too bad of an angle, you can easily fill it with the custom roof again but used in a different matter, it might simply be a little harder to get it right if you dont really know this trick well enough.

Could you elaborate on what that trick is? I would greatly appreciate it.

If your serious about not wasting time while building put it on peaceful mode and turn on build hack there are other things to that allow you to build easily its in the wiki then when you know how to build stuff the ins and outs then play it ...

Eh, the cannibals/mutants play such a big part in this game, I feel like I wouldn't have the full experience with them off.

I would recommend you build what you can figure out yourself. After that you can look up building tricks on youtube if you really want to (farket has some good videos).

The building sytem in this game is great because it is kind of wonky. You can build the weirdest stuff if you are patient. Just try think of something and you most likely can find some way to build it.

I too would recommend build your own stuff and what you can figure yourself, then after, if you want to raise your building skills, i d say look at tutorials videos but mostly look at nice builds from the og forest player, i can link you some if you want, personally if you use hacks or mods, i dont think you will ever develop the same style as when you dont use them, all you will know is your hacks but not the real machanics, thats my pov i dont see how i could have develop such unique style if i had used any hacks

Yeah its a buzz kill in peaceful mode hope I didn't sound like a smarty pants I did this in order to figure stuff out but its so much more fun fighting the cannies and building ..

yeah its purely vanilla. its not finished yet tough. as for time taken game says day 446^^

not quite sure how many logs it was. around 3-4000 by now. lost count. the tower alone is about 1000 logs so far. can fly all the way to the upper snow biome from its top without useing the infinity glitch. and what you cannot see on the picture is the ziplines that come and go from the tower as its too far away for them to load probaly.

actually not really. i can maybe post a picture from the towers current peak. there is still plenty of trees. i dont use respawn it feels cheaty. makes you think of actual ways of transporting logs longer distances. and hard survival makes you think twice on how to make structures safe or protect them aswell.

you can tell the difference on the island from the sky tough^^ but there is still tons of trees left. ill post a screenshot from a different angle to show it better.

this shows better how many trees are gone its taken from the current peak of the tower. its less than one would think actually. there is way more trees on the island than people often think. respawn is only needed in huge multiplayer sessions with like 8 or more people.

yes thats the plane wreck near the flag. yes there is a zipline connecting its upper part with the tower. yes building the ziplines was a pain.

the single trees are simply still there because gotta put your sap collectors SOMEWHERE nearby.

yes there is cranes INSIDE the tower. yes building these was EVEN MORE PAINFUL as each failure requied a reload because even crane blueprints hate other structures for some reason.

look on the other picture. shouldnt be hard to spot the yacht.

Man, I've already used s-so many logs in my playthrough, that without respawnable trees I'd probably already choped entire forest on the island twice or more.
