Is the Houseboat Worth It?
So I recently got The Forest and I was flipping through the little crafting guide thing, and I came across the Houseboat. At first, I was really excited. Who wouldn't love a boat in the middle of the ocean where the monsters can't get you? But then I looked it up in a few places, and found that you can't save your progress. Or sleep. Or do anything really productive. At all.

So I wanted to know before I wasted my time collecting log after log: is it worth it? Are there any other practical uses for it rather than "ooh, cool. A Houseboat"?

It was not for me, i thought it was a huge wast. After i made it, it sorta floated off lol.
Even after i sim back out to it, avoiding sharks, they could run up to it and "under", but sharks where glitching through the "floor" O.o i LOL'ed hard. It was creepy lol, [Flashbacks to JAWS] Maybe it was just bad luck, but i love the tree-house myself.

But best advice i could give ya, is try it out and see how it is and if you like/love it.
Then the next game > + Avoid it, or Build it right off aised on your EXP.

Happy Holidays!

HAHAHAHA, i had that happen as well, made me laugh, but i was sad at the same time.
Just make sure, to not place it over [Rocks, Sharks, and reall Shallow water] it shouldent flip

Aso @ DinoEars4Life Add me mate, we can Co-Op, & anyone else for that matter.

Lol :)
A Thought... I wonder if these house-boats have "Acidental Matrix Insurance" lol.
GF: Hello, thanks for calling AMI, How can i help you?
Me: Ahh yes, my House-Boat i just built went flipping through the ait, and landed upside down in a pool of sharks....
GF: Ahhh yes, well i will need to Dispatch an Agent to you.
Me: Ummm the sharks ate him :( can i get a new one?

Hah, Alright. Will do. I think I'm gonna hold off, the underwater mutants and glitching sharks was kinda the deal breaker, but thanks none the less. And sure thing, you seem like a neat dude (or dudette, although let's be honest. This is steam we're talking about XD)

not yet at this time it seems.. unless you dont mind getting your feet wet a bit: http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/40862758516243541/3E1B65F76D4A69135651ACA0F410E1C9146CD521/

as you can tell it kind of sits wonky in the water and the water line is higher than the wooden floor at places. In all fairness I don't think this would even float IRL with just a wooden floor of half logs. I do think something with slightly more buoyancy is needed.

On the plus side: it cost me only 47 logs to build instead of the items listed...

Well, hopefully by the time they fully release it, it'll be fixed and allow you to sleep/save, and perhaps it could even be bigger, allowing you to build things such as the rabbit pen and such to become fully sustainable on the boat. A way to move it around while still inside would be nice as well.... Maybe a motor fashioned by circuts and pennies and would have to be fueled by booze.

Those features would change the game from survival to a vacation-sim … ;D

Lol yeah, guess you're right. I just wished it had a more practical functionality.

Not sure if this is intended but this game, by current design, is encouraging obtaining knowledge of the most heavily patrolled and dangerous areas of the Forest and using that in the decision making process of where to build your home base. To me that feels very survival game and I like it.

I'm also disapointed with house boats, but the devs will get to it eventually. I can wait. As far as your dream goes to live in the ocean where the mosters can't get you, you can do that. I've been building on an island near the eastern part of the beach. If you've found the area where the boxes and shipping crates have washed up on the beach, two small islands can be seen from there.

Depending on what you build there, it's a lot of work. That part of the beach is further from the forest than the rest of the beach and of course you have to swim your supplies across a small channel under threat of shark (they never did come close enough to me). But now that I finally have my log cabin and some food storage built it was totally worth it.

Well whaddya know. I've got a little hunter shelter set up in that exact area. I was just planning to build on the beach, since it was so far away from the forest, and quite honestly I didn't think you could even get to those islands. But this, this changes things. >:} Anyways, thanks for the advice.

I know these posts are kinda old but in case no one has noticed yet, I just built a house boat and you can build on it. I built a fireplace (the one with stones) and a bed inside so now I can sleep and save. You can also kind of move it by walking up against the walls in whatever direction you want though it's not very efficient. You can also build on the raft, for instance I put a couple log holders on it. I have 3 log sleds so I go out, fill them up, bring them to the raft, put all the logs onto the raft, take it out to my house boat where I am also using the custom building parts to build a stationary platform out on a large lake. Very time consuming but still pretty damn fun and cool that I can do that. Would be cooler if the devs can make it possible to build more things on the house boat like the snack shelf and/or add a little attachment to drive it along the water like the raft does. Or just make it a little bigger, maybe even two stories. Or modular. XD

I'm a great raft fan. In earlier versions I could put a fire, log holder, stick holder and stong holder, fill them up, and take them out to one of the islands. I haven't built a raft in v.26 yet (too busy surviving) but I will use it to move up and down the coast, go ashore and collect a few logs, sticks and stones and leave berfore the cannibals and hominoids arrive. t
Then back to my base camp to build it a little stronger.

I'm getting smarter too, I think! I have 3 working sites: 1. East of Dead Shark Beach; 2. West of Dead Shark Beach and 3: East of Anchor Cove. All have cliffs on the shore side so I can keep a pretty good look out as I collect the materials. At each site I will build the simplest shelter and fire, plus a rest bench, and a holder for logs, sticks and stones. I've collected the fish spear and cooking pot.

My plan is to go to one of the work sites and fill up the holders on the raft first so I can run when the cannibals appear. Then I fill the land based holders. Usually I can work 2 days and 1 night before I have to run. Sometimes I can refill the landbased holders so I just have to load up from them and be ready to run while refilling them.

The raft is the safest travel I've found along the S side of the Forest Island and all the way around to the other 3 containers on the E NE beach of Snowy Island. I can stop and hunt and fish and get more water at places, and boil it in my tin pot on the raft.

Now if the raft is working again I'm ready to start exploring!!!!

No.
It can get stuck in the ocean floor, and sharks can jump through the "floor".
Ne0nLobster Oct 25, 2015 @ 11:32am
IMHO, no. It's still very buggy and a current waste of resources. It's best to just build a raft and sail over to one of the smaller islands and build your base there.
