The Plane Axe would make a greater weapon, since it stuns the enemy and you can perform combo hits with it until they fall over.
If sticks would be upgradable I'd use them, to swing even faster.
Plane Axe + Rope + Modern Axe = Axe Nunchucks
There not being stats on weapons, it's your choice, but if it's up to me, it's the Skull Club, and the Bow. Btw, crouch and kill seagulls. Mass gather feathers, gather sticks, and then stealth with these weapons becomes your allies. If you can, leave a dead body around in case a savage cannibal wants to eat it, then you can get a stealth kill and use their body.
130 teeth in a big axe like the modern axe or the rusted axe results in 1-hit-kills with the small cannibals and takes 3 hits with the big ones.
I've yet to try out if upgraded spear would make a valid weapon against enemies. Nevertheless it's the best one for hunting small animals like lizards, bunnies and birds; collecting leaves and fishing. I prefer the plane axe when it comes to killing deer as they can withstand more hits from the spear.
Your only problem is when there is more cannibals than you caught on fire. Sometimes there are 5 and you managed to only burn two, or even reinforcements come. So really there may not be a single best weapon, but rather, different weapons for different situations. This would help balance out a weapon scale, along with make a purpose to even craft those other weapons in the first place. Besides, it would be cool to charge out with friends when one charges in with an axe and another sneaks around with a bow, as you defend in between with your club. Different tatics with different weapons would be cool to see in multiplayer.
You aren't running into them fast enough, or it's raining. You don't even have to attack them with the weapon, you can hold block and just sprint into them and bump them and it lights them right up. If it's raining, you're out of luck because flaming weapons go out almost instantly in even a light drizzle. I agree it would be awesome, and I'm sure it's planned, if weapons were more balanced for specific purposes. As it is now, any weapon lit on fire can kill a patrol without you even swinging it. If it rains, bring out the molotovs and try to either hit multiple, or get them to run into the fire left behind.
