Finding direction of travel
Hello everyone,

I'm new to the game and love the survival aspect. However, I find myself getting lost and wondering into trouble more often than not.

Is there a reliable way to find direction in this game? Does the sun track along the east/west plane? Does moss grow on a specific side of the tree? Ect.

Any advice is very much appreciated!

You can place stickmarkers on important locations. Then when you are far away they appear as icons on your screen (you can turn those icons on and off in the options menu).

Alternatively you can place a blueprint of something (f.i. a fire) but not start building it. This will result in a hammer icon. It's almost the same as the previous, except you can get rid of the icon if you don't need it anymore (by
deleting the blueprint).

About the sun... I actually don't know. I don't have the feeling she follows the east/west rule... but maybe I'm confused.

Another good way is to remember notable places (lakes, special trees, the mountain, the sinkhole,...) and travel between them to get to know the surroundings.

Last but not least, there's an unofficial online map. Some don't want to use it cause they feel it's cheating... That's up to you to decide.

Happy surviving!

Thanks for all your help Regyptian. I'm starting to recognize things now :P

It does appear that the sun rises in the east at least, and the shadows on a tall tree make a great line for finding east/west. I worked my way along the eastern beach and now found an interesting mountain-side to try and camp on. Thanks again!

I usually pick up a good sense of direction in games after I start to notice landmarks but when I try and follow the sun I ALWAYS get lost for some reason. Not just in this game but all open world games. Homes and stick markers are your friend early on. Mark caves, fishing spots or places you like to scavange. There's stuff in nearly every direction now so it's worth getting lost a little to discover new content.

Yeah all good advice. Playing is ur best way as you start to remember where things are. When I started playing I used markers all the time. I still do sometimes in caves. A good place to start is learning the 2 lakes in the middle of the island. They are good markers. Also villages, containers and the beach itself. I think we will eventually get a map and/or compass.

I've started planting 1,2,3,4,5 stickmarkers at major points around the island. If I'm at the '1' marker site I can see which way the rest of the markers are located by counting the stickmarkers I've placed. Since I'm running from mutants anyway it was no problem.

as well as the sun, use the line of sight towards the mountain, if your looking at the mountain then your facing east, you can also use the camp icon you have made, get to know exactly where your camp is, there were good maps once you could download, maybe someone has updated them

There's an interactive online map that is up to date
