In The Long Dark it seems as though survival is your one and only goal and is very difficult to achieve. They plan on adding NPCs and some degree of questing or interaction with them that will force you into decision making. It also seems like there is not much in the way of crafting in TLD, besides starting a fire and cooking food. I'm very interested in that game but I'll probably wait until full release to buy it, even though it seems much more polished and stable than The Forest currently.
In The Forest you must not only survive against the elements, which isn't nearly as hard compared to TLD, but you must also struggle against the cannibals and mutants on the island. Crafting and building will be a huge focus of the game while trying to stay alive against the cannibal threat. It does not appear there will be any NPC's or quests of any sort besides possibly saving Timmy. However The Forest is still very buggy with huge performance problems for some users, and new bugs introduced each patch, some of which can be game breaking.
All I can suggest is watch some videos of both titles and figure out which you would enjoy investing in more. But remember they are both Early Access titles, you are not buying a fully completed game.
I backed The Long Dark on kickstarter, and have some time playing it. There are some general similarities to The Forest, but the game mechanics are entirely different.
In TLD, there is much more management of your condition, your calories, your body temp, your fatigue. You are constantly losing calories, which will eventually lower your condition if you don't replace them. The more you move, and the colder you get, the faster you lose them.
You don't gather wood like in The Forest, it is an automated process that you use through a menu and time progresses, and depending on your condition, what tools you have, and where you are in the map, as well as the weather all decides how much wood you will gather.
You can find supplies in containers and buildings, but you can't really use the tools in real time, like in The Forest. Everything is done through menu screens using those variables I mentioned earlier.
There are wolves that will attack you, but there really isn't combat, it's a quick time event where you have to click LMB repeatedly until you build up the bar, then hit RMB, which is disappointing.
It is more of a simulator than a first person action game. To me, you are much more aware that you are going to die in TLD. It's harsher, the environment more deadly, the atmosphere more hopeless. You realy feel that dread of a lone survivor fighting to live.
But as of right now, you can't build things. You can repair items, but that's it. I'm not sure if they plan on adding crafting or not, I haven't followed the game much since I backed it.
Be aware though that there are some bugs in the game, it's by no means finished, and a lot of things are buggy.
Btw. The Forest is no real survival game. It has a full story with a end.
You do realize that The Long Dark has a story right? It's episodic.... And just like in The Forest, it's optional, you could just play sandbox mode and ignore the story.
Ive seen a few long dark videos and it looks like a much better and more entertaining game with a real sense of survival.
Go for the long dark forget the forest
To be honest, The Long Dark isn't any better in either of those regards.
It does all come down to what you want though. If you want a real sense of survival, then the survival simulation is obviously the way to go. Which game is more entertaining is completely subjective; personally for me, The Long Dark is as boring as watching paint dry.
So now i have to buy three alphas again. The Long Dark(thx for the tip), and i found Life Is Feudal and Out Of Reach.
Damn, i own a lot of these sandbox games, but they are all alpha, not just one of them is nearly finished. So for the time waiting, maybe 1-2 years till some of them are released, i bought Minecraft before three weeks. No joke, have to deal with it´s graphics, but it´s fun, because you can mod it like you want and play it like you want. But even the modded graphics... xD
