House Icon Why?
So, having a giant ghostly icon of my shelter floating on my screen all the time to help me know what direction to go (even when I've been knocked out and drug into a cave) is not only annoying, it seems to be counter to the spirit of the game. All I have to do is build a leaf tent and suddenly I have a compass?

Maybe it's a nice idea that you have to find a compass so you got those marks. Or only when you have it in your hand.

Yeah, that would be a really good idea. If the game designers really feel they must have magical floating icons showing you were stuff is, it should at least be a product of some navigation instrument you find.

Well, you can find a working walkman on the sail boat, and some other stuff, but no compass?
That makes no sens...

have to agree here, its a nice thought to be able to find your way home, but it is rather counter productive to the intensity of the game. I could understand even a home made map from paper on the plane with an icon on it ( for gameplay ) to show you where about you are, IF you have explored that region. As is you have no fear of being lost as long as you hurry up and put up at least a marker.

Not only is it counter the *spirit* of this game, it's even counter productive, if you have more than one camp (as you have no idea which marker is for which camp).

But I'm suspecting that it might just be a temporary solution, until map and compass are implemented.

Same with stick markers.

I agree totally here. The on screen house / stick markers are both an annoyance and a departure from the supposed spirit of the game.

At the very least, it would be nice if they made a hotkey that could enable/disable them on the HUD. They kinda break immersion for me.

Completely agree that markers break the spirit of the game in that it completely removes any feeling of desperation of trying to find your camp when you're starving/cold etc... but at the same time I think markers are a good idea for complete n00bs like me. I think any game needs to remain accesible to the complete novice, but in regards to The Forest, I think there should be a way to turn markers off.

I agree too. I could see having to set up stick markers every so often possibly with a direction indicator on them to point you in ways you may want to go. But only be able to see them when in visual range and none of these eagle eye locations.

Would also be cool if the canibals could break or move your markers to totaly mess with you if that was the case.

(Cant say I havent used them in the past when it was dark out to find my way home. But I think it would have been more immersive trying to struggle finding my way in a dark forest to get back to my base. )

No home icons sounds great.

I would appreciate a craftable map and a compass instead of the icons.
On the map one should be able to mark locations. And updating the map (to cover the area that one just explored) it would take an active action by the player (a map does not draw itself, right?). Also extending the map (larger area, later in the game) would require further crafting.
The compass could be found in one of the cases from the plane, for example.

Good idea, but are you suggesting a map which always indicates the player position via some sort of "you are here" pointer?
Le Deflagosseur Sep 11, 2014 @ 10:09am
I say a survivor made map on which we could "draw" markers. But we should have to figure out where exactly we are with landmarks.

@Le Deflagosseur
Yes, that's what I had in mind. An interactive map would not fit the "survival" character of the game. So one would have to use compass (if present) and landmarks to navigate and keep the orientation. I could additionally think of something like crafting paint and a brush to be used to paint persistent marks on trees or rocks.
