As for a very flimsy, flimsy theory, those villages where once occupied by normal human beings. Something, something happened and they mutated and moved down to the caves to worship something, something. Still, from time to time they have memory fragments of the time before they mutated and then they go down 'memory lane' and sleep for a bit in their old surroundings.
@ maria_kalista - you have 317 hours in the game and also haven't noticed the taller cannibals?
Folks, they've been in the game since it was released.
Why would I want to adjust my settings?
Edit: And apparently, per the Devs, .016 tweaked skin shaders, and that is where the "blue skins" come from. Maybe the taller ones have been there all along but they are noticeably taller (what would be about 6-8 inches if they were standing next to you) and their skin tone does take on a blue hue at night. So if they don't appear a greyish blue to you as well, why call them "blue-skins". Do they appear somewhat sadder and more depressed than the other cannibals?
And as for the 113 hours, I've only gone into one cave. Everything you need you can get on the surface (except the climbing ax) so there's no reason to go down there.
