I built 3 of them so I don't run out of water.. :D
Ah - found this in another discussion from one of the dev's:
"You can drink straight from the basin or alternatively craft a Waterskin with 2 deer pelts and a rope, which you can fill there for a carryable drink of freshwater. (You can also fill it at ponds, with the dirty water taking health when you drink it)"
Also, if you add water to the pot, save your game and reload the water won't be in the pot. Otherwise, you can keep it in the pot in your inventory and just cook it when you need it.
The water collector is actually the best way to do it if you're operating out of a base. I've got three set up so I have enough each day. :)
If you're desperate though, pond water will hurt you but not kill you.
@philcollings, I found one by one of the tents on a beach. Along with the rebreather. Turtles are usually on the beach but they vary (sometimes I find them on one beach, other times they're on another). Seem to reset each morning.
