Why do my saved games get deleted when I die?

As much as I love this game, I have to say it is glitchy as hell now. Not only are the saves getting deleted, but it then won't let me save anything to the slot it just emptied. The first slot is the only exception. I looked for the _RESUME_ files that everybody keeps talking about, but they're GONE for every saved game. Whiskey tango foxtrot?!

As oddly specific as it may sound, ever try the "rawmeatmode" command? It's one of the hidden difficulties meant to make the game a permadeath hard mode experience, it doesn't change the title screen like the other game mode commands do, and it is the only thing I've so far encountered that does what you are describing.

IF that happens to be the case, I don't think you can get the older saves back but you can fix the overall issue by blindly typing "meatmode" while sitting at the title screen. Restores everything to default settings.

I thought of that, but no, I've never tried it. And those cheat codes aren't something you can type in accidentally. Like I said, though, the game has gotten increasingly glitchy. For example, it won't let me save my game to any of the empty slots. I can only use saved games I already have, once it "rawmeats" me, I can no longer use that empty slot. I can only save games to the same slots I loaded them from. I could only watch helplessly as one saved game after the other disappeared. When the last one was gone, I had to start the whole damn thing over again from the beginning. It will let me save to that first slot, but none of the others.

No, that's not it either. I'm too chicken to play in hard mode. But maybe the game is glitching me onto hard mode somehow.

Did where the file where saves are get turned to read only somehow.
Only thing i could think of other then the normal validate files.

How do I check that? And how do I change it?

One other weird thing: when I die from shark bites, it doesn't permadeath me, but only then. I mean, what?

Guessing have tried validating files or even uninstall and delete all folders in appdata etc and fresh install. Also guessing never modded before?
As to the read only thing, just go to your saves right click the files click properties and make sure read only box is not check. Is a long shot but never know.

I did uninstall once, but I didn't delete the folders. I thought if you uninstalled anything it did that for you.

Wish everything would clean up after itself sometimes they don't, especially my wife lol. Would give reinstalling a try and deleting everything you can find should just be the SKS folder with saves.
But since will be in save file would check to see if somehow your saves got turned to read only. Could also move your old saves somewhere else and try and move them back one by one if you get it working right.

I can't even find those folders now. All I can find in Windows Explorer is "SteamLibrary", and when I try to access it, it starts doing this slow-ass searching ♥♥♥♥.

Okay, I found SteamLibrary > steamapps > common > The Forest. But now what? What should I be looking in?

Well your save's will be in a folder SKS
should be in C:\Users\yourpcname\AppData\LocalLow
Drive letter might be different,^^^ yourpcname is well your pc's name.
Hmm the slow searching if it is like my laptops your hdd might be on it's way out.
Is it full or close too it? and close is like 20%ish not saying that is what is wrong with it or the game. All my dam laptops hdd's do that then die, i ride them hard.

I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and no, your savegame doesnt get deleted once you die, so its not really permadeath.
