Covering yourself in mud?

I do it all the time in the game, but i dont actually know what it does, what is its purpose?, Anyone??

It reduces the ability of cannibals to see you. It goes like this :

They can see around 50m infront of themselves in thick forest. When you are standing, just large trees block their line of sight. When crouching everything but grass blocks their site.

Applying mud effectively reduces their vision to 30m, meaning if you are covered in mud and crouching, you are really hard to see.

How do you cover yourself with mud???? Ive never done that.

There are small puddles of mud around. When you find one, press "E" to smear yourself up. it washes off just like blood so try to avoid water if you want to keep it.

press \ to check your arms for blood or mud

The puddles happen after a downpour of rain, a heavy rain. You will see puddles that look blackish , like tar on the ground. just look at it and press E and you will be covered in mud.
