Quick slots to swap items quickly
I would be a lot easier to use various items in combat if we had a hotbar or some sort of keymapping system setup. You could pick an item in your inventory and then slot it to a button, or in a quick slot. Switching from an axe to a molotov for example is not very easy when you're running from mutants seeing as the menu does not pause the game. It would be nice if you could pause the game by pressing escape. I get that it's hardcore, and realistic. But real life doesn't exactly allow us to play whenever we want for as long as we want, and I'm not choosing this game over life....so pausing would be nice.

Maybe it's fine having one directly in the inventory screen, depending on the slot where you place items in (1-10), it can be equipped pressing the corresponding number keys but it isn't Minecraft and i don't wanna see something like a hotbar in the main HUD.

It could be like Rage(tm) where the quick slots are in a wheel that only pops up when you press a certain button?

I would just be happy with a 'Simple Swap' item with the mouse wheel.

Its not so bad swapping weapons really but i guess a hot bar wouldnt hurt too much

I think a hotbar would detract from the realism of the game. Think about it. If you try to "hotswap" between weapons, where are you swapping these weapons to/from? If they allow you to craft a strap when rope/twine is added then i can understand having a weapon on your hip or back, but even then i'm hoping it's not an instantaneous switch.

While i still don't fully understand where the tarp came from, i like the realism in how you have to stop and unroll it on the ground to grab a different item, and how it does not pause the game when you do it. It's tough and cumbersome, but it's realistic.

It's not realistic, do you have pockets on your pants? Because I know I do. You could definitely make sure you had something "at the ready" in real life on your body in at least a few spots. If you can't, then you're going to die because you tried to lay out *everything* in your backpack on the ground just to pick up one molotov. You don't have to have an overlay on the screen all the time, or even at all. Just map items to a few keys, maybe 1, 2, 3, 4.
that aint it Jun 20, 2014 @ 7:36pm
I wouldnt put the ax away for anything. Yet everytime I eat a candy bar or cook a lizard I have to retrieve it from the folds of my pack. Its already not realistic having to dig out your main tool everytime you rummage amongst your pack.

Maybe a hot bar isnt the best option for quickly retrieving your weapon, but your belt, pocket, or snug part on your person is a viable spot to third hand you axe until you toss that molotov at that creepy lady trying to nibble your leg.

I don't think anyone understand the concept of quick slots. It is NOT the same as a hotbar...

I would rather just have it be linked to the scroll wheel, that way it is not always on screen.

Who cares about realism? I'd prefer a break from the realism of the game if it meant I wouldn't die after being sucker punched by a cannibal while trying to grab a weapon out of my inventory.

There have been dozens of games that have allowed quick access to items without an on-screen "realism-breaking" HUD element.
