How scary is the game?
This game looks really good and right up my ally, but I have one fear with it, and that is fear itself. I'm a complete light-weight when it comes to horror games, I just don't deal with them well. I watched a lets play, and at parts things got pretty creepy, but I can't really judge if the game would be to bad for me just off that because theres a huge difference between watching a scary game and actually playing it. So can you guys sorta give me a sense of how scary it is? Thx!

The scare isn't the only fear you should have when playing this game.

when you first start it is kinda scary but you get used to it and it becomes a lot less scary once you know how the AI work

It's more creepy than anything. The cannibals are always around, and when they spot you, an eerie piano chord plays. The caves are the most frightening part of the game, and even then it's just unsettling. Mostly it's about the atmosphere, as the mutants themselves aren't that frightening.

I find that the creepiness comes from knowing you always have to be looking over your shoulder. Every time I think I am safe and can build and explore somewhat freely is when bad things happen. I will be carrying logs back to my camp to build my new hut and then all the sudden i hear something running. 1/2 a second later it hits me, I havent scanned the area in like 3 minutes and boom a cannibal is punching me in the back of the head. When i turn around I notice its not just him but 2 of his friends as well. Just one example.

The other creepiest part I found, and love in the game is the AI behavior. I usualy tend to spend my nights on the boat while still building a base. Many times I have seen cannibals walk to the edge of my camp and start building something. Once morning rolls around I get off the boat and start seeing what they did. My personal favorite was 2 sticks in the ground with a string between them. On this string was an array of body parts, one of which looked axactly like a big ole, well take a wild guess of the parts on the male body.

Its more about tension than true fear. Always tense. Always being hunted. Just remember its far from a complete game. Don't buy it expecting it to be anywhere near perfect. The devs are working hard but its still very early in the Early Access phase.

the game isnt really about "jump scares" it just creates an awesome sence of dread more than fear

My friend ♥♥♥♥ himself first time playing was funny i think the game is fairly nerve racking but once you figure out the bugs and quirks... honestly this isnt a game its an alpha so keep that in mine Alpha's and Game's should not be classified as the same thing.

At first you'll piss yourself over the cannibals but eventually you'll get used to their company. They're actually not all hostile. However if you're knocked out and end up in a cave you'll most likely ♥♥♥♥ yourself. I know I did today when I ended up in a cave with every single kind of mutant, I can't tell if it was an epic escape or a disaster. Kill enough of them and learn their ways and you'll become comfortable. I used to be scared ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of them but now I laugh everytime I get to mess around with them. I look for them, I anticipate them.... mainly because I'm an evil bastard and I love killing them and sticking them on effigies.

Is it just me or does your character's breathing when you're low on stamina scare the HELL out of you? Especially when it's quiet. The mutants don't bother me (The regular ones, anyways....) but that sudden breathing always gets me.

I think it's terrifying to hear footsteps gradually but quickly getting louder behind you at the dead of night.

This. Walking around with that lighter in the caves and then turning around and seeing a red mutant will freak you out hard.

I tend freak out when I leave my fort place to chop down trees and halfway through I turn around to see one of the cannibal chicks standing there. I proceed to lose my s*** and so do they. Apart from that it's all good.

Well last night I had soiled myself. Not from a jump scare or random attack; but it was in the way the AI behaved. I was smashing their effigies and all the sudden I was flanked by three of them. I poked one with my trusty weak spear and proceeded to tear ass up the hill away from them, and towards home base. After I had broke contact, I turned to see if they were actively pursuing me but two of them hunkered down while the third was walking perpendicular with me all the while maintaining eye contact.
It was just super freaky and chilling because you got the vibe that you were a toy to them and they will cut you down when they want to. Idk. Anyone have similar experiences? But yeah, no, the game is terrifying at points. Safety is a word you'll forget quickly because it doesn't apply here.
