Assume the dog is reliant on you for food, etc. You must now ontop of surviving, also help said dog to survive. What will the dog eat? How will the dog interact with you/the enviornment? How will the dog guard you? Will it attack on sight? Will it fight only when a cannibal got close enough? Will it defend only when you are attacked?
You honestly didn't give any explanation of your idea.
Let's assume said dog will make noise. Noise should attract cannibals. Let's say a guard dog attracts cannibals since it barks whenever it sees them. Dog now removes any hope at not being seen. and is a liability rather than an asset of "guarding".
You now have a choice, no dog + stealth, or dog + no stealth
it could actually become a way of defending the player. Capture a wild dog and tame it. That dog, now in your territory "marks" it. Keeping the wild dogs away. Perhaps even having the other wild dogs "back up" your tamed one if its attacked or threatened.
The ideas abound. If done right it could be an awesome optional component of survival.
Naw in all seriousness it could be a good idea especially so the main character doesn't feel so lonely. I mean once you get your base built up and a food supply like a pond or something situated, you're good to go but you'll put yourself in harms way for the hell of it after that point. With a pet the main character has something else to rely on and to protect, adding a bit more of the emotional aspect into the gameplay.
Idea's for said dog:
Clicking dog (IE. E key) opens Dog menu.
Using mouse you select stay and alert (dog barks when native approaches camp but does not engage), guard (dog barks alert then will engage once enemies breach your camp. Dogs health may go down fast), hunt (dog has chance of bringing back either tennis ball, stick, or meat - said meat may deteriorate faster then if you got it yourself), Defend (dog follows you and will attack any that come near you), mark (dog will pee along your camp or any effigies you have set up, changing the AI of enemies to cautious/curious instead of all out hostile)
Dog has a tame meter which must be kept above 0 otherwise it will run off. Can tame with tennis ball/meat/etc
Dog has hunger meter, when it reaches 0 the tame meter will begin to decrease at a faster rate then before. Hunger meter should be slow as wild dogs do not get a guaranteed meal everyday anyways.
Dog has health meter, when it reaches 0 dog dies. Injuries that are more significant then scratches must be treated. 80% health and up = can heal itself. 50% - 80% = dog cannot do any tasks other than a stay and alert. Under 50% health you must heal dog before health reaches 0.
Dog must have pro's and con's.
Not suggesting its a bad idea, I just feel its a little too MMO for The Forest
The defend only thing would be awesome
Perhaps instead of us controlling dogs actions, the coding could have a 'chance' of dog doing something of the sort. Role of the dice type thing. Dog feels like going pee on camp or dog finds a stick to chew on that you could decide to take, dog decides it likes natives more than you, etc.
