Hello Guys,
though this post is allready up for a while, i want to share with you my favourite spot with a friend, which we used for a base and survived actual 20 days ingame....

look at this map:
http://theforestmap.com/

south west of the SInkhole is the "geese lake"....
the lake itself provides fresh water (though it should be cooked before drinking so make sure i get a pot with you) and fish - so the basic needs are allready fulfilled.

At one side of the lake are some cliffs, where you can climb up but the cannibals and tribes CANT come down. Infront of the cliffs is a short beach. If you build there, you are completly safe, because you got the lake on the one and the cliffs on the other side.

we managed to build houses with wooden panels beyond to place ONTO the lake; so basically we build and artificial island.

Wood chopping is best place on top of the rocks; just through the wood down and build up !
Near to the lake is one cave entrance and a bit more north near the see shore is a camp - if you enter the caves there, you will get some dynamit inside - but safe before entering ;-)

Sounds like an interesting spot, I haven't played the game in a few months, but I'll see how long me and my friends can hold out there. They tend to use the artificial island tactic, I'll see if this is better.

if you wanna have peace, do it in a island (enemeis cant swim). but if you wanna have big house or other thing, remember about bridge for fast moving. BUT when ytou have bridge, you must protect it...

in my latest game i have not built any big base , only about 20 or so hunting shelters all over the place. and every cave enterance i find i place a stick marker.... needless to say an option to turn off the hud markers would be nice so i dont have 10 icons on the screeen hiding my view. once the game is more developed and i spend more time basebuilding i will probably do the whole massive fortification thing , but as it stands im not really gonig to lose anythign if i need to make a new save due to a game update. on day 20 so far and if things get hot with mutants i just leg it towards another hunting shelter for safety.

Really depends what you're looking for... I've been building stone structures which benefit greatly from even ground. There are only a few places on the map with a natural level surface, and this is currently my favorite spot:

My favorite area to build legitimate bases is here:

http://theforestmap.com/#-1125.1,888.7

You have 2 sides to wall off. One is a large open area between two cliffs (takes about 60 logs or so to make a wall all the way across using defensive walls). The other is a small hill, I often set bomb /molotov traps up at the lower section, then use bone walls to funnel enemies into a trap near the top.

I wrote a guide a while back that might be helpful on where and how to build http://steamcommunity.com/app/242760/discussions/0/405692758706945343/

I try to find the giant crates and build around them using platforms and walls. I know there aren't many trees but its actually a great defense after the big guys come in.

I've built my base in the beach between a bunch of bags and the large metal containers(you know...the ones with boxes in them). It's actually a good spot cause there's a bunch of rocks lying everywhere and respawning every time i go and get some wood from the hills next to the beach. Also there's a HUGE(i wouldn't lie if i said A GIGANTIC) ammount of Rabbits,Lizards,Turtles, etc around spawning like crazy...How often do Cannibals attack me you ask?....well the maximum ammount i've discovered so far was 4 of them( 3 intelligent ones and 1 starving) and they only appear to attack in a 4 day(ingame) period(3 days:cannibal-free,1 day:4 people attack)

Well...i don't want to mislead you about the supplies or anything you can find there because that side is true...but safe? GEESE LAKE IS EVERYTHING BUT SAFE! The cannibals can actually get down to the shores and if that weren't enough....there are alligators :"(

If you look in the Southeast corrner of the map, you'll see a large round island out in the ocean with a small chain of islands to the south of it. Directly west of the first small island is a cliff with an outcropping and a beach. It makes for the perfect place. The location is marked on the map with a house icon that says, "This is a good place to make a house and a farm. There is a cave near here and there is also rabbits and lizards for eat."

The nice thing about this location is that it's secluded. The cannibals rarely go down there. They usually stay up at the top of the cliff away from you. There's only one way to get to you, along the cliff face, so if you set up good defences along that cliff face, you're golden. Also, you can set up bridges to those islands docks, houseboats, and rafts for water escapes and building.

I normally find the lake and build right there. Even though that would mean I'll get in trouble with alligators, I'll just have to be more careful and the rewards outweighs the failure. It also has plentiful of ponds and fish as well a deer. It doesn't have much tree so you might have to walk a bit to chop wood but in the end, Food, armor, and water wise, Its your greatest bet.

I always build my base here

http://theforestmap.com/#-711.1,1584.8

I do it for many reasons:

  • The cliff is a natural protection against cannibals, and the only way where they can reach you. On my day 60 of single player they roamed around it, but never managed to get down. If they do, they get damage for falling, but they have to get pst the trap field properly set.
  • Easy to build a base, since you don't need to build a lot of walls.
  • Lots of resources: there are countless rocks to build walls, turtles for meat and shells, seagulls for meat and feathers and lots of fish as well. Up over the cliff there are many trees that you can easily bring down by throwing them.
  • Near that area there's a cannibal camp for cloth and old pot, and that camp is the one where you respawn after they capture you the first time, namely cave 2 (where you can find the modern axe, compass and isle map)
  • If lucky there may be a plane crash extacly over the cliff.

Instead of geese lake north of the 3-4 guys crucified and all with watches and entrance to the cave that hides the katana is another lake which is my favorite spot. No alligators, close to the beach with the sailboat. It's thus far 100% safe as the cannibals don't know how to walk those planks. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=729763078

On the south shore of the island, where the yacht is, there is a cliff overlooking the beach. If you look at TheForestMap.com I am at co-ordinates 420, 1180. There is a Camera icon right there called "Port View".

I build there always for these reasons:

a) The beach below you is full of turtles, seagulls and suitcases which respawn (shells, meat, feathers and cloth in abundance plus a place to wash).

b) On the clifftop where you are building there are milions of trees and stick plants and rocks absolutely everywhere so the build itself is easy. (logs, sticks and stones in abundance)

c) Two fishing ponds right in front of the base (fish and water in abundance)

d) Walk along the beach to the immediate west and you come to the washed up shipping containers where tons of circuit boards and alcohol respawn. Cannibals also build tons of effigies there which is great for Cloth and Alcohol.

e) Area is full of rabbits.

f) There is a human campsite very nearby (quite a big one) which has tons of suitcase (watches, alcohol, meds and cloth in abundance)

g) Immediately in front (slightly NE) of the base is a patch of land where all the herbs grow, especially Aloe.

h) Once you clear a ton of trees to build, your base ends up on a clifftop, facing north. So you have a cliff behind you and in front the ground slopes gently down away from the base which means you see the enemy coming for miles and have superb vantage when shooting from the walls at my leisure.

Be warned. This location will be attacked. It is not completely unreachable by cannibals like some island or lake bases are. But that's the fun of it for me, they never get inside the completed base, so I spend hours up on my watchtowers shooting them, burning them and blowing them up from a great height. Very amusing. Currently on day #81.

If I knew how to take screenies and upload them to Steam, I would...

The game does have such an option.

A few times I built on the little beachy area to the south east (mentioned by others). It's a handy spot for having a defensive line away from the base and has natural protections that can be built around.

The large village is near by so supplies aren't an issue.
Short raft ride from the yacht for more supplies.
Good fishing spots in the sea.

With a little observation it's easy to see the paths of cannibal patrols which can be trapped to keep patrols away from the build area, a first line of defense.
