I like to wall myself in around a pond with fish, but these areas seem to be hotspots for villages and patrols. Also heard that the gnarly looking trees are patrol hotspots. I pretty much just look at the resources versus the risk. Between the fish and a couple farms I rarely have to venture out except for building materials.

Go left from the beach (the one you're usually close to when you crash) and along the cliff until you reach a giant tree. Build your camp as close to the cliffs that are in front of the tree as possible. I've not encountered one enemy while I've been in my camp, and even when the cannibals begin searching farther in their patrols, they are over 100 feet away from the camp. Plus the camp is spawn point for lizards, and has dozens upon dozens of trees.

Interesting, I usually build on the side of the island on the coast near the mountains since its so open, but theres a cannibal camp right next to me so it gives me problems. I might try this area out.

I built mine near that island by the water. I walled up a camp up against the rock cliff, resources are plenty, wildlife too for food and easy to defend against attacks since they can only come from one direction. Got a screenshot of it on my profile if you need an visual look of it.

Realistically you can just build a small square of defensive walls with no entrance. So long as you are not near trees they can't get in and I am not even sure they have the AI to launch from a tree into your base yet.

You can scale defensive walls the same way you scale a tree.

There is a small ravine near a pond that I have come to like. 3 walls against the rock with a fire pit in the doorway offset just enough so I can get in and out, but they will fry every time they try to come in. Another bonus of it is that I can just go nuts chopping trees and they all roll down into my camp until I get too far from the slope. Also gets a lot of lizards passing through (or spawning, not sure) Before that I like many others set up next to the rocks or on the cliff by the sailboat.
I built my first base against a cliff on the beach next to the half sunken ship. You dont need to build as many walls and the AI is too stupid to jump down from the top of the cliffs.

This place?

I still need to add fences all the way to the cliff too. I want to build fire traps between two walls.

I think the best area to make a base is at the beach, considering how the beach is the most easiest place to wash off infection, fish, get an overview on your senarios etc.

Fact! Ocean water does not in fact, clean you. Or at least not for my install. Only ponds, lake and river waters seem to do such for me.

But true on the fish supply, only issue is if there is any amphibious mutants, you would be very vulnerable to them.

I personally would perfer a cliff side base with an emergency jump into the ocean to escape in case of overwhelming odds.

That is a good idea but not if you want to build, it takes alot of running just to chop logs and go back all the way to the cliff. it will be am endless struggle, and if you noticed they have marked that place already, that was my fav base but i dropped at due to them coming sometimes to scout which ended with them scouting on the left side of the ocean near the boat, and the process of building was intefre alot cause of that, if you go way further from where the ocean is near the cliff you will strumble on a tent with a spear and a ocean fill of fish, that spot also haven't been marked. it is great for a temporary campp and yuou are close to the logs and have clear view of everything around you.

Ocean water always cleans me just fine.

I built my base on one of the little islands off the main map. Pretty much beat the game since the cannibals dont go that far out in the ocean. Just a ♥♥♥♥♥ carrying logs all that way though.

I build at the plane, if it crashed in a way I can get in an out even better. I just place two walls with enough room to form a door to the plane. By dark I have a U shaped area formed with camp fire and tourches and can kill any canables wtih cocktails that get to nosy, if it gets bad just retreat into the plane. Next day I'm able to have the whole front area enclosed.

I really haven't found any place that I don't get discovered eventually and I hate spending most of my first day running through the forest when I could be building my base and using what I've been given. Just wish I could pick up the plane parts and pile them up out of the way. They can be annoying to navigate.. but that and also be an advantage esp that first night.
