Find water that you 'can' swim in, small lake or something, once he starts swimming the blood/dirt starts do wash off automatically, or stand in the rain.

Only way I have found is to be rained on.

From what im reading in other threads, the Temporary Shelter (one with sticks and leaves) ISNT classed as a SAVE point , only to rest your character.
Has to be one of the upgraded shelters for a save

I tried the hunters shelter...didnt work.

If you get covered with black tar. Don't wash off. It's a camouflage. And yes! Dutch vs the Predator comes to mind.
