The very definition of the too dumb to live trope, that merchant would be.
There is a story, its just kind of secondary (as in, you could play a long time before finding the end of it). So far, it seems to be based on finding your child who is taken by the cannibals.
If I recall, the devs said that when they implement the co-op, it'll be around 4 players max. At the moment though, the game would not be fun in co-op due to the bugs and save option issue.
Expect to see the co-op system added once the major bugs and optimization are out of the way.
